Leah-Simone Bowen is Appointed Theatre Officer for Toronto Arts Council

Toronto Arts Council is pleased to announce that Leah-Simone Bowen will be the new grants officer responsible for its Theatre programs.

Originally from Edmonton where she graduated from the University of Alberta, Leah has been part of the Toronto theatre community for the past 12 years, working as a writer, director, producer and administrator. She has worked with such companies as Obsidian Theatre, Native Earth Performing Arts, Cahoots Theatre and most recently, the Luminato Festival. Board and committee affiliations include serving on the STAF Board of Directors, PACT’s Cultural Diversity Committee and Professional Development Committee, and Toronto Arts Council’s Theatre Committee.

“Leah has been involved in the theatre community in a variety of roles, which combine to give her an appreciation of the challenges facing theatre artists and organizations in Toronto,” said TAC Director and CEO Claire Hopkinson. “She brings a depth of experience and knowledge to her new role and we believe she will make a great contribution, not only to TAC, but also to the community.”

TAC Theatre programs, including grants to Playwrights, have a budget totalling over $3.1 million. Over 250 applications are received annually from theatre organizations and artists and approximately 120 grants are awarded through peer review processes.

Leah is succeeding Margo Charlton as TAC Theatre Officer.  Margo is TAC’s new manager of Research and Impact.

Leah will assume her duties at TAC on January 4, 2016.
